At the New York event, Motorola and Verizon announced the coming of three new Droid line of smartphones. One of them is Motorola Droid Mini which is going to succeed the Droid RAZR M which was released in the previous year.
The Droid Mini comes with a 4.3inch display which is the same sized display that was present on the predecessor phone. Verizon will be selling the Droid Mini for $99 on a two-year contract. The phone has an appealing body sported with an angular design. Even though the phone can be categorized mid-range phone, it has got a very good tech specs. The entire size of the phone is 4.8inches.
The 4.3inch TFT display gives a display resolution of 720p. Unlike the newly unveiled siblings, Motorola Droid Ultra and Motorola Droid Maxx, and the predecessor Motorola Droid RAZR M, the phone lacks AMOLED display. Since the display can deliver a max of 720p, it is not that impressive.
The phone is powered by 1.7GHz dual-core X8 mobile computing system which includes a dedicated GPU, app processor and a language processor. The 2000mAH battery is good enough to deliver 28 hours of battery life.
The phone is powered by 4.2.2. Jelly Bean OS coupled with exclusive smart features that are also available on other newly unveiled Motorola phones. Without touching the screen, users can seamlessly use gestures and voice commands to look for directions and make calls.
The Motorola Droid Mini also comes with Active Display feature which illuminates that portion of the display were new notifications are showing. The feature appears good on AMOLED display but on LCD display it is not that impressive. Moreover, it can eat lot of battery compared to the Droid Ultra and Droid Maxx that comes with AMOLED display.
The Droid Zap feature lets user share photos, videos, and data files with another user provided they are within 300 feet range. The feature is similar to the much hyped AirDrop feature that will come to Apple iDevices that run on the forthcoming iOS7. The Driod Zap feature will only work on other Motorola phones only that have the Droid Zap feature.
Like the other new Droids, even the Droid Mini comes with a 10MP camera at its back through which you can 1080p HD quality recording. According to Motorola, the camera lens makes use of larger pixels which makes it possible to snap good quality photos in dim lighting conditions. At the front, there is a 2MP camera which is good enough for performing video calls. You can also charge the Motorola Droid Mini wirelessly.
If you are interested in buying the Droid Mini, you can place your pre-order from today with Verizon. From August 20th, Verizon will start selling the phone. What do you think about the Motorola Droid Mini? Is it good enough to take on Samsung Galaxy S4? The HTC One Mini is also in the making. If we go by the specs, the Droid Mini appears to be quite competitive. We need to wait and watch to see how future unfolds for the newly released Motorola phones.
