Global warming just happens to be one of the most deadly creations mankind has unleashed upon its world. Because it’s an unseen threat, there are many who debate that it’s not really happening. Even though most of the scientists in the world agree that climate change is an actual threat, there are those who disagree and who spread misinformation. Read on to find out the reason why climate change denial exists.
- The concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has increased by more than 30% since the industrial revolution
- Increased temperature in Europe in 2003 caused 70,000 more deaths than in previous years
- Because of rising sea levels, over half of the world’s population lives within 60 kilometers from a shore line
- Climate-sensitive diseases caused over 3 million deaths in 2004
- According to the World Food Program, the number of people affected by climate disasters this year alone will rise to 375 million
Even if currently 97% of worldwide scientists agree that global warming and climate change are impending issues, according to a study performed this March, only 63% of Americans believe in global warming, while 18% believe that it’s a fabrication. Only 10% truly understand the scientific world’s concerns regarding the matter.
One of the reasons behind the alarming statistics is that the issue gets very little coverage in the media. According to the same study, only 40% of Americans claim to have heard about climate change in the news in the past month, and only 18% in the past week. This, considering the Paris summit taking place this week.
Another reason for the public ignorance related to the very serious issue, is not very fixable, as it depends on the way we are built as human beings. We are incapable of actually conceiving the disasters we can cause worldwide by not carpooling or applying that extra layer of deodorant. Human beings are built to only consider another roughly 150 people as actual humans, the rest being just numbers.
The most important reason behind the general misinformation are the misinformation campaigns run by major fossil fuel distributors. This has been going on for the past three decades, with one of the biggest sources being Ronald Reagan’s own George C. Marshall Institute.
After defending his Strategic Defense Initiative became irrelevant, the Institute moved on to “defend the world against the misinformation spread by the lying environmentalists” at the behest of fossil fuel distributors.
Initially claiming the issue was fake, when they were proven wrong they changed their standing, claiming that even if it is real, climate change cannot be man-made. When this was proven wrong as well, the misinformation campaigns started claiming that even if global warming is real, America has the ability to deal with it.
And this is the reason why so many Americans don’t believe in the serious threat looming over us.
