Blonde people are not dumber than others, study says
STATES CHRONICLE – Everyone has heard at least one joke about dumb blondes and the stereotype has went across the world, but with no actual evidence that women with a lighter hair color are necessarily less intelligent than brunettes. After all, how can hair color affect IQ levels?
Finally, all the blond women of the world can rest assured that despite the jokes, there is now scientific proof that they are not dumb. According to a new study conducted by researchers at the Ohio State University, both women, and men with natural blonde hair have IQ scores similar to people who have other heir colors.
Moreover, researchers claim that women with natural blonde hair may actually have a slightly higher IQ score on average, about 103.2, than women with brown hair, who have 102.7. Also, women with red hair have an IQ average of 101.2 and the ones with black hair have 100.5. However, the difference is too little to bear any actual significance, besides the fact that blondes are not dumber.
Although many people might not see the discovery as important, it could help blonde people raise their self-esteem. The problem is that blonde jokes while they might seem harmless, they are stereotypes which can have a great impact on the people they’re addressed to. Stereotypes, in general, could affect social experiences and even career experiences as they may lead to discrimination.
By scientifically proving that blondes are not dumber than people with other hair colors, we might be able to decrease stereotype rates in time. Though the study doesn’t prove blondes are smarter, they are at least as smart as anyone else.
So far, researchers haven’t determined whether there is a genetic link between IQ and hair color. However, what they did find out was that people with blond hair were more likely to grow up surrounded by books, than people with other hair colors.
The team of scientists has conducted the study using data from 10,900 white Americans born in the baby-boom times, who had their IQ tested back in 1980.
All in all, given the findings, we might hear less blonde jokes in the near future which is definitely good news for blonde people, who have been struggling with the stereotype for such a long time.
