ZTE Axon 7 – Pre-Order Today, Get It July 17th

July 14, 2016 By Georgia Dawson Leave a Comment

ZTE Axon 7 available for pre-order starting July 13th

The ZTE Axon 7 is by far the most impressive device from the company yet.

STATES CHRONICLE – ZTE is a Chinese smart device manufacturer who has so far been quite modest with its releases. Targeting a mid-budget starting out is always the smart marketing idea, and ZTE quickly managed to make a name for itself for high-quality components in low-price packages. The ZTE Axon 7 is the company’s flagship, and its potential gateway to a whole new audience.

The design is similar to the HTC model phones with a double set of speakers on the top and the bottom of the device. The audio is quite solid too. It is very close to the HTC level but falls flat (pun maybe intended) with some tunes.

ZTE Axon 7 Tech Specs

The phone is running on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820. With the Snapdragon 821 being recently announced, some may consider the Snapdragon 820 to be “last year’s chip” but Qualcomm has stated on repeated occasions that the 821 is not a direct upgrade to the 820 and that they are meant for different devices and, to a certain degree, serve different purposes.

The Snapdragon 820 chip comes equipped with a Kryo quad-core 2.15 GHz CPU, an Adreno 530 GPU, and an X12 LTE modem.

Accompanying the Snapdragon 820 chip, the ZTE Axon 7 comes with either a memory of 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage, or a memory of 4 GB of RAM with 64 GB of internal storage.

The phone supports A MicroSD memory card in the SIM 2 slot. The external memory for the card is capped at 256GB.

The elegant screen has a 5.5-inch-wide AMOLED display.

The front camera is more than adequate for taking selfies, recording video messages or streaming and has a resolution range of 8 MP and 1080p for video.

The main camera has a resolution range of 20MP and can also capture high-quality video at 2160p, as well as 1080p and 720p. For dynamic and intense videos where every detail matters, we suggest the 720p resolution as it captures 240 frames per second, while the other two are capped at 30 fps.

The power source for the ZTE Axon 7 is a non-removable Li-Ion 3250 mAh battery.

The operating system is the Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow, and the Snapdragon 820 supports Google’s VR platform, Daydream.

We recommend the ZTE Axon 7 with the higher memory and internal storage, as it is a solid model for price/efficiency and it can reliably remain a usable phone for over two years. It will not be available for distribution in the US, but it is still a solid pick if users can manage to get ahold of it.

The ZTE Axon 7 with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage is available for pre-order for $400 unlocked. ZTE will begin shipping out the devices, Sunday, July 17th.

Hangouts Gets To Version 11, Video Sending Enabled On Android

July 13, 2016 By Deborah Cobing Leave a Comment

Hangouts is being updated to its 11th version.

Hangouts for Android finally gets the 2-year-old iOS feature.

STATES CHRONICLE – Google’s own messaging apps, Hangouts, will soon be receiving a Play Store update that will let the user send and receive up to one minute of video.

The update will finally enable the feature to Android users. In February 2014, Hangouts for iOS was the first version of the app to add the feature, although it only allowed the recording and sending of videos that were up to ten seconds long.

The app then received an updated which enabled the recording and sending of videos that were up to one minute long, one month later in March.

Google was recently accused of making better versions of its apps for the iOS rather than for its own OS, Android. As a response, it appears that the company will be trying to make amends and bring out updates whenever possible.

Videos on Hangouts for Android, although two years late, will be supporting resolutions of up to 1080p. Videos on Hangouts for iOS currently support resolutions of up to only 360p, although after the latest update can be up to 2 minutes long.

A contrast between quality and quantity is starting to be visible between the two versions, at least until they will all share the same features.

Hangouts Version 11

To send a video to a Hangouts contact, users will have the option of live-recording an up to one-minute-long video with the app or choosing an already existing video from the on-board storage of the device. All video features will be accessible through the button next to the images features button on the chat bar.

With version 11, Hangouts will no longer support the merged view between SMS and conversations with the same contact. Google stated that users found the feature to be confusing and that it did not see much use. The feature has been entirely removed.

Nevertheless, version 11 will let any user present in a group remove another user. This is a big step forward in regards to group moderation on Hangouts, as those features are greatly lacking.

Finally, the patch includes a fix for square cropping of images and for static GIFs.

Hangouts v11 will be rolling out to the Google Play Store in the following days, so if your Android device does not automatically update, the app will be available for manual download soon.

Android Wear Smartwatches Covertly Developed By Google?

July 7, 2016 By Deborah Cobing Leave a Comment

Android Wear Smartwatches rumored to be in the making.

Android Wear Smartwatches could be coming soon, along with the Google Phone.

STATES CHRONICLE – A recent unofficial leak in the world of Android has many users standing at the edge of their seats in anticipation. The leak states that Google is researching and developing their very own brand of Android Wear smartwatches.

Presently, Google has, of course, denied to make any statement whatsoever in regards to any of the leaked information about the potential future Android smartwatches. Nevertheless, the information made available is entirely plausible.

The code-names for the smartwatches are Angelfish and Swordfish. They will have Google Assistant integration. Both Angelfish and Swordfish are believed to be Nexus-branded. Angelfish will feature a larger size with additional tech.

Swordfish is seen as the potential smaller and more financially accessible watch, with a dial diameter of 42mm. The leak also stated that it would come with a built-in heart rate monitor.

Angelfish will have a dial diameter of 43.5mm. Apart from the built-in heart rate monitor, it will come with GPS and LTE.

Considering both watches will come with heart rate monitors, there is a high probability that Google Fit or its successor will be already installed on the smartwatches. Google Fit features will be displayed and available to users without having to connect to a smart handheld device.

Finally, the leak also included several pieces of information and data which indicated that the Google team is working on new watch faces. With in-house designed Android Wear smartwatches, information display and app access can be greatly improved.

What is Google making apart from rumored Android Wear smartwatches?

Since the beginning of June, rumors, speculations, information leaks, and even official news around Android have been more frequent and all pointing towards one specific endgame – a stand-alone series of Google smart devices.

Hardware manufacturers having increased their efforts to develop their operating systems. The ones who admitted to any rumors stated it was just a contingency measure.

Meanwhile, there is talk and proof that a Google Phone is in the works and specialists believe this product could even give Apple a run for its money.

With hardware manufacturers developing their software and with software manufacturers making their hardware, the world is quickly approaching the era where the difference between the two will not matter.

With a Google Phone and now with the Android Wear smartwatches possibly in development, how big of an impact will the company have on the handheld and smart device market?

Birth Control Pills Can Be Ordered With Apps

June 23, 2016 By Jack M. Robinson Leave a Comment

Birth Control Pill can be bought in the United States via apps or online.

Birth Control Apps give experienced women accessibility and convenience.

STATES CHRONICLE – Birth control medication can be made available to women living in the United States via several smartphone apps. Using an app to get a hold of birth control has both its advantages and its disadvantages. Current statistics indicate that, in some areas of the United States, it is quite the popular option.

Using an app to get birth control offers accessibility and convenience. Firstly, women have more constant access to their smartphones rather than to a doctor. One might not be in close range, requiring both difficult to schedule appointments, as well as a long time to get there.

In addition, the app does not require parental permission for young women who are at the age of 14 or 15. Scheduling a visit to the doctor generally requires having a parent present as well. The apps do not need parental permission. However, on registration, they do require uploading a photo ID to confirm identity as well as filling out a virtual form.

Doctors believe that overall the addition of the app will be beneficial. Nevertheless, they have stressed out the importance of proper research and documentation when picking out the appropriate birth control. None of the current apps on the market have a comprehensive knowledge base integrated.

Women who already have prior experience with taking birth control end up with the most to gain from using the app. Young women or women who have not taken birth control before stand a chance to order or take the medication in an improper manner.

Several of the apps do have various tools which prove to be very useful. The most common option is that of the daily reminder which is a simple notification built into the app. Monthly reminders also exist. In addition, menstrual calendars can help women keep track of their cycles and medications.

Medication ordered from apps is usually procured from pharmacies which are nearby the user’s billing address. It is commonly delivered at an address or can be made available for pick-up. Buying the birth control can also be managed through the app similar to a monthly subscription service. Most apps will charge the user’s credit card for their cost of the birth control and the delivery.

BLOCKS Reveals Modular Smartwatch

June 12, 2016 By Sebastian Mc’Mannen Leave a Comment

The BLOCKS modular smartwatch is an impressive new prototype.

BLOCKS is making a smartwatch with as much versatility as Batman’s Utility Belt.

STATES CHRONICLE – BLOCKS presented their newest modular smartwatch prototype with several working modules. The short but sweet presentation left interested parties wanting more.

The concept of modular design in the world of smart devices is still something new. Not every major name has modular devices and users cannot easily get a hold of such device. Nevertheless, the technology is coming along nicely.

When BLOCKS revealed their prototype, less than one year after their successful Kickstarter campaign ended, viewers were left in awe. BLOCKS managed to assemble a sleek and efficient smartwatch with a very accessible interface and classic design. And that was just the Core for the modules.

In regards to the smartwatch Core, it appears that BLOCKS is currently going with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 2100 SoC.

Five different modules were presented, which may at first not sound like a lot but the current prototype or better said, the current girth of the average human wrist, can only hold between one and four modules. The BLOCKS website currently boasts with over a dozen modules, so it is safe to say that either careful consideration in choosing or several wrists will be used.

The modular assembly and dismantling process seems easy and intuitive, however, it may not yet be drop or shock resistant. The modules assemble by easily being plugged into the watch, or attached to each other.

Modules range from functions such as Camera and Flashlight to SIM cards or Flash Memory. The Extra Battery will be one of the more popular choices, and BLOCKS have stated that they’re also working on something referred to as an Adventure Module.

The modular smartwatch prototype was presented with the Flashlight Module, the Heart Rate Monitor Module, the Temperature and Barometric Pressure Module, the Extra Battery Module, and, while not an actual module, the smartwatch’s adjustable strap band.

The OS appears to be a customized version of open source Android. Several apps readily and always available within the core were presented. Most modules will apparently be used with one additional app each. It was unclear, however, if utilizing the app will be similar to plug and play, with individual apps being installed on their respective modules or if the user would be required to pre-install the apps.

The BLOCKS modular smartwatch is currently available only for pre-order for the price of $330. The pre-order package includes the Core, with four additional modules. The first batch of watches is scheduled to get to the initial Kickstarter backers in October.

WhatsApp Features Document Sharing

March 3, 2016 By Jack M. Robinson Leave a Comment

"WhatsApp sharing files"

Users will be able to share PDFs on WhatsApp

STATES CHRONICLE – WhatsApp, the most popular chat application, has recently celebrated seven years on the market and has announced some changes. They said they will no longer support Nokia and BlackBerry operating systems, focusing more on Android and iOS.

But they will also make new updates to improve user experience like changing the color of the background in chat, share videos and photos from third-party apps or zoom in on videos. The app will also have a new feature for sharing documents.

So as not to get them mixed up with photos or videos, the app will have a new button, separate from the others, which will allow you, once you tap it, to share a document directly in your chat window. Both iOS and Android users can find the bottom in the already existing menu for sharing different files or locations.

In order to be able to use the new feature, users will have to update their app to versions 2.12.14 on iOS and 2.12.453 on Android, respectively. After the update, users should be able to share docs from Dropbox, Google Drive and iCloud Drive.

For now, only PDF files are supported, so it might take a while until we will be able to send MS Office documents or others of the sort. So far, there have been some users who already reported being able to share PDFs and claim that the feature displays a preview of the file as well as its size and number of pages.

This new feature is among the first new “toys” that WhatsApp is planning to launch as part of their endeavor of turning their focus on business, expanding the application to a more serious field, without ending its basic use which is socializing and entertaining.

Over the time, WhatsApp has proved to be very useful as a communication tool, being separated from any social media website and having its own special interface. More and more people use the app, not only because its user-friendly, but also because its free, compared to the traditional SMS which depends on your operator.

All in all, WhatsApp is definitely growing and attracting more and more users as time goes by, as it launches great and practical new feature that could help not only individuals, but businesses as well.

iOS Brings Exploding Kittens to Your Phone

January 23, 2016 By Deborah Cobing Leave a Comment

"Snapsot of the Exploding Kittens game"

The Exploding Kittens game broke a couple of records since its release.

STATES CHRONICLE – After the card game had an incredible amount of success, iOS brings Exploding Kittens to your phone. The roaring success of the game was attributed to its likeliness to now famous Cards against Humanity, a game which brings out the worst in people.

iOS brings Exploding Kittens to your phone after the incredible success that the card game had on Kickstarter, being one of the most funded projects that ever emerged from the platform. It seems that the game is breaking record after record being the most funded game, the game with the most individual received funds (219,000 people contributed with almost $8.8 million) and now, at only a day after it was released, the game managed to reach number 1 in the Paid App top.

While Cards against Humanity, with which Exploding Kittens were associated, manages to bring out the worse in people and make them build friendships after realizing the lack of humanity in their peers, Exploding Kitten does the exact same opposite. The Russian Roulette of card games helps you ruin your friendships more than Uno or Monopoly ever managed to.

The basic principle of the game is that the players pull cards one by one until they find an exploding kitten. But things get more complicated because you can defuse the furry danger with sandwiches made out of catnip or belly rubs, and you can also sabotage other players and send an exploding kitten to them.

iOS brings Exploding Kittens to your phone with little changes in the original card game. The developers, Shane Small and Elan Lee partnered with Substantial studio in order to transform the game into a full-functioning app. In order to make the App more appealing for all players, they modified the game a little.

According to Small and Lee, the Exploding Kittens App features some new mechanics, new art, voices and sounds. Also new cards have been added while some were removed. But all in all, the game is still as fun to play on your phone as it is when you play it in the card form with your friends.

What is more remarkable when it comes to the App’s overall success is that the digital version, which costs only $1.99, can only be played with other people that are in the same rooms as yourself. This is due to a combination between Bluetooth and Wi-Fi technology.

While iOS brings Exploding Kittens to your phone, Android and Blackberry aren’t far away with the development, either.

If you’re not yet convinced of the game’s potential, you can check out how to play Exploding Kittens in the video below.

Despite Lack Of Popularity, Windows Phone Caught Samsung’s Eye

January 12, 2015 By Sebastian Mc’Mannen Leave a Comment

Despite Lack Of Popularity, Windows Phone Caught Samsung’s EyeEven if Windows Phone is less and less attractive to buyers in rich countries, Samsung seems to have taken an interest in the mobile platform. Despite its lack of popularity Windows Phone caught Samsung’s eye. Samsung’s turn to Microsoft’s platform is intriguing as the mobile producer is known to run most of its gadgets on Android.

A Korean publication reports that Samsung intends to cut off its dependence on Android and is very likely to dispatch new Windows Phone gadgets in 2015. Apparently, Samsung is not yet going all the way with Windows Phone because of a royalty dispute between the two companies. A Samsung official, quoted by the Korean Times, said that the company will roll out more Windows Phone handsets provided the dispute is settled this year. It remains to be seen if the Korean mobile developer will take released handsets and equip them with Windows Phone or will launch completely new Windows Phone gadgets.

But Samsung might have other reasons for not pushing forward with Microsoft’s platform.  Buyers in U.K., Italy, France, Spain, Canada and the U.S. are slowly turning their back Windows Phone. The market proved infertile for the Windows Phone last year and the company invested more in developing budget smartphones that are to target emerging national markets in South-East Asia, Africa or Latin America.

Windows Phone stocks in North America dropped from 4.3 percent to 3 percent in the last two years and in Europe they tumbled from a peak 9.8 percent to 8.3 percent. Emerging economies statistics are not available and, as such, Microsoft success on developing markets is also questioned.

Windows Phone didn’t gain any comparative advantage on the Chinese market either, dropping from an officially low 2.7 percent to 0.6 percent over 12 months. Chinese smartphone users are more inclined to purchase local made Android options which provide them with a wide range of regional apps. Furthermore, Brazil and Japan are also seemingly uninterested the platform.

Microsoft’s hope may come from India and Indonesia where buyers appear to be more attracted to the platform.  Also, the company’s cheaper feature devices are more appealing to Indian buyer who formed an attachment to the Nokia brand.

But even if Windows Phone will conquer developing countries this still might not make it worth as it will mean more work for software developers. The apps they design would have to be low memory and for low-income buyers which in turn implies they will not profit too much from app sales.

The Android platform remains the leader of global markets with Apple next in row, enjoying a growing popularity in China, Japan, the U.K. and the U.S.

The SwiftKey App Becomes Free From Here on End

June 12, 2014 By Janet Vasquez Leave a Comment

swiftkey app The freshest news in Android – land come from SwiftKey, one of the most successful Android – paid apps. The company announced that the former $3.99 app would be free from here on end.

If you don’t know what the app does, let us describe it to you briefly: it is a keyboard app that allows the user to type super fast due to the text prediction technology which offers the sender the option to choose among 3 different possible words displayed above the keyboard.

Apparently, the prediction feature made the app incredibly successful. It brought the company substantial revenues and funds, so it is quite puzzling the reason why they suddenly decided to cut out completely the price tag.

We have to look at things from a financial point of view. Despite the SwiftKey app’s success, given the latest news in the tech field, it seems the company had no other choice but bring the price down to zero for all its new customers:

It’s the kind of make-or-break decision that could help it scale up in fast-growing developing markets, and in SwiftKey’s case, also help it in going head-to-head with similar, free technology that Apple will soon offer to iPhone users.

However, the SwiftKey app is currently embracing new opportunities. Together with the price tag cut, also came a series of upgrades and new features that make the SwiftKey app even more compelling. It has the ability to offer prediction support for more than 800 emoji, sports 30 new free and paid themes, allows the user to choose from 66 languages and so on. The company published an extended list of new features and upgrades, together with a few good news that will certainly please older customers.

The SwiftKey app won’t see the end of its days too soon, no matter how big of a challenger Apple is. Moreover, according to specialists from Forbes who look deep into the matters,

Along with the app, SwiftKey also sells white-label technology to the likes of Samsung, which embeds SwiftKey’s algorithms in its Galaxy line of smartphones, and the BlackBerry 10 mobile OS that’s on several of the company’s recent smartphones. As a result it claims to be on more than 200 million devices worldwide. Now on the consumer side, the four-year-old company will make money solely from enhancements to the free app — ie. premium keyboard themes.

On the bright side, we now have the SwiftKey app for free, a pile of interesting features and enough interest to test them all and make the best out of them. Maybe the new iOS 8 and all of Apple’s blows will imbalance SwiftKey for a while, but the company still has the funds and the powerful partners to still make it on the market.

Toshiba Announces Tablets with Windows 8.1

May 29, 2014 By Georgia Dawson Leave a Comment

Tablets with Windows 8.1The great thing about Toshiba is that it can do both low-price gadgets and premium products really well. For example, the Toshiba Satellite P55T Laptop with a 4K Display is stunning. Hold on to your horses though, because Toshiba has done it again, this time in the low-price range. It just announced three tablets, one running Android and two tablets with Windows 8.1.

Toshiba Tablets with Windows 8.1

Running Windows 8.1 on tablets is a new thing for Toshiba, the company being a big Android lover. Just today, Toshiba announced that it was going to introduce three new tablets on the autumn lineup: two Windows 8.1 tablets (with 8 inch and 10 inch screens) and one Android tablet (7 inch screen). All three tablets are in the low-price range and should hit the market as early as July.

Toshiba Encore 2 with Windows 8.1

Both the 8 inch and the 10 inch tablet are powered by an Intel quad-core processor. The 8 inch Encore 2 has 1 GB of RAM memory, 32 GB of internal storage and will cost $199. The 10 inch model has the same 1 GB of memory, the same 32 GB of internal storage and it will cost $269. This is quite a feat for Toshiba, considering that their original Encore had an 8 inch screen and it cost $329.

The 10 inch Encore 2 will have a micro HDMI port, but the 8 inch model will not. Aside from that, the two products are very much identical. They’ll both have IPS displays with a resolution of 1280×800 pixels. They both have front and rear cameras with the same specifications: the front will be a 1.2 MP, 720p and the back, a 5 MP, 1080p. Both will have 802.11n Wi-Fi adapters with Bluetooth 4.0 and stereo speakers.

The 8 inch Encore 2 will weigh 0.81 pounds and the larger; the 10 inch model will weigh 1.2 pounds. The cool thing about the larger model is that it will be thinner (0.35 inches) than the 8 inch one, which is 0.38 inches.

Toshiba Excite Go with Android

Just as the other two Encore 2 tablets, the Excite Go is powered by an Intel quad-core Z2735F processor. It has a 1 GB of RAM memory and 8 GB of internal storage. If you want to expand the internal memory, you can do so with the help of a MicrSD card. The Excite Go will cost $100 dollars.

What are your thoughts on these tablets with Windows 8.1? Which one would you buy out of the three? Do you think it is a smart move on Toshiba’s behalf to run Windows on its tablets? Leave us a line in a comment section below.
