Despite Lack Of Popularity, Windows Phone Caught Samsung’s Eye

January 12, 2015 By Sebastian Mc’Mannen Leave a Comment

Despite Lack Of Popularity, Windows Phone Caught Samsung’s EyeEven if Windows Phone is less and less attractive to buyers in rich countries, Samsung seems to have taken an interest in the mobile platform. Despite its lack of popularity Windows Phone caught Samsung’s eye. Samsung’s turn to Microsoft’s platform is intriguing as the mobile producer is known to run most of its gadgets on Android.

A Korean publication reports that Samsung intends to cut off its dependence on Android and is very likely to dispatch new Windows Phone gadgets in 2015. Apparently, Samsung is not yet going all the way with Windows Phone because of a royalty dispute between the two companies. A Samsung official, quoted by the Korean Times, said that the company will roll out more Windows Phone handsets provided the dispute is settled this year. It remains to be seen if the Korean mobile developer will take released handsets and equip them with Windows Phone or will launch completely new Windows Phone gadgets.

But Samsung might have other reasons for not pushing forward with Microsoft’s platform.  Buyers in U.K., Italy, France, Spain, Canada and the U.S. are slowly turning their back Windows Phone. The market proved infertile for the Windows Phone last year and the company invested more in developing budget smartphones that are to target emerging national markets in South-East Asia, Africa or Latin America.

Windows Phone stocks in North America dropped from 4.3 percent to 3 percent in the last two years and in Europe they tumbled from a peak 9.8 percent to 8.3 percent. Emerging economies statistics are not available and, as such, Microsoft success on developing markets is also questioned.

Windows Phone didn’t gain any comparative advantage on the Chinese market either, dropping from an officially low 2.7 percent to 0.6 percent over 12 months. Chinese smartphone users are more inclined to purchase local made Android options which provide them with a wide range of regional apps. Furthermore, Brazil and Japan are also seemingly uninterested the platform.

Microsoft’s hope may come from India and Indonesia where buyers appear to be more attracted to the platform.  Also, the company’s cheaper feature devices are more appealing to Indian buyer who formed an attachment to the Nokia brand.

But even if Windows Phone will conquer developing countries this still might not make it worth as it will mean more work for software developers. The apps they design would have to be low memory and for low-income buyers which in turn implies they will not profit too much from app sales.

The Android platform remains the leader of global markets with Apple next in row, enjoying a growing popularity in China, Japan, the U.K. and the U.S.

James B. Comey FBI Director Criticizes Encryption

October 17, 2014 By Janet Vasquez Leave a Comment

In the midst of all the hacking that is happening these days, including the recent Snapsaved.com hack where thousands of photos sent through Snapchat were leaked on the Web, James B. Comey FBI Director criticizes encryption and believes that U.S. citizens should let the government spy on them for their own safety.

James B. Comey FBI Director Criticizes Encryption

James B. Comey FBI Director is very unhappy about the fact that Apple and Google and other tech companies are making it harder to access personal information. The encryption these companies are creating makes it hard for law enforcement officials to gather the information they need to catch criminals. If you think that this is another way of saying that FBI has a hard time getting your personal and private information, then you are completely right.

James B. Comey FBI Director

In a speech James B. Comey FBI Director made on Thursday, he said that all the increasing implementation of encryption technologies will leave law enforcement agents unable to collect evidence against wrongdoers.

He said:

Those charged with protecting our people aren’t always able to access the evidence we need to prosecute crime and prevent terrorism even with lawful authority. We have the legal authority to intercept and access communications and information pursuant to court order, but we often lack the technical ability to do so. Those charged with protecting our people aren’t always able to access the evidence we need to prosecute crime and prevent terrorism even with lawful authority. We have the legal authority to intercept and access communications and information pursuant to court order, but we often lack the technical ability to do so.

In other words, national security agencies and law enforcement agents want U.S. citizens to accept that the government is spying on them and to make sure that they don’t do anything to make it hard to them to do so.

Facebook and Apple Will Freeze Their Female Employees’ Eggs

October 15, 2014 By Jack M. Robinson Leave a Comment

Earlier this week we saw how Apple is going to launch Apple Pay mobile payments service, which is going to allow users to pay in stores and online with their smartphones alone. Today, we’re going to take a look at another Apple news: it appears that Facebook and Apple will freeze their female employees’ eggs, if they want to.

Facebook and Apple Will Freeze Their Female Employees’ Eggs

Egg freezing is now for the first time ever being offered as a work benefit. Facebook and Apple will freeze their female employees’ eggs if they choose to undergo such a procedure. At first glance, it’s mighty nice of these companies to offer this. The procedure is a very expensive and can cost up to $10,000, while the egg storage and cost around $500 per year.

Facebook is ahead of Apple and has already started to offer up to $20,000 in coverage for one egg freezing procedure to all their female employees. Apple will start offering this benefit starting with January 2015.

Facebook and Apple Will Freeze Their Female Employees’ Eggs

An Apple spokesperson released a statement via mail:

We continue to expand our benefits for women, with a new extended maternity leave policy, along with cryopreservation and egg storage as part of our extensive support for infertility treatments. We also offer an Adoption Assistance program, where Apple reimburses eligible expenses associated with the legal adoption of a child. We want to empower women at Apple to do the best work of their lives as they care for loved ones and raise their families.

But is it mighty nice of these companies to offer to pay for the freezing of their female employees’ eggs? Does it discourage women from having babies and if it does it that a bad thing? Or does it simply make women to put their careers ahead of family.

Please share your thoughts on this matter. We would love to hear from you.

October 13, 2014 By James Faulkner Leave a Comment

Apple seems to be moving at the speed of light with its device launches and software updates. It was announced last week that the next Apple media event would happen on October 16; Apple is scheduled to launch their new iPad Air 2 and even their iPad Mini 3. Today, we’re going to take a look at a new service from apple that is going to make mobile payments a breeze: the Apple Pay service.

Apple Pay Service – Coming This Week

Sources are saying that the new Apple Pay service will be made available this week, after the Apple media event which is going to take place this Thursday. The service is going to make shopping easy-as-pie because you won’t even have to take your credit card out of the wallet.

Everything will be stored inside your Passbook and Apple Pay app: your credit card information and bank info. To complete a purchase inside an actual store, iPhone owners will just have to hold their phone over the contactless readers and touch the fingerprint sensor on their smartphone. You won’t even have to open an app or even wake your display. All this is possible thanks to the NFC antenna (near field communication) that is present inside iPhone 6. And to make things even more unbelievable, you won’t even have to check your screen to see if the transaction was successful, your phone will vibrate gently!

Apple Pay Service

Android users already have Google Wallet, but it seems that Apple Pay is going to something else entirely. It was one month that Apple announced the Apple Pay service and now iPhone lovers are getting ready to change the way they do their shopping for good.

Apple Bankrupts Sapphire Glass Makers, GT Advanced Technologies

October 7, 2014 By Jack M. Robinson 1 Comment

After breaking sale records during opening weekend, iPhone 6 is finally available in China which means more money for the tech giant. Today we found out that Apple bankrupts sapphire glass makers, GT Advanced Technologies, after new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus did not feature sapphire glass displays.

Apple Bankrupts Sapphire Glass Makers

Apple Bankrupts Sapphire Glass Makers

When Apple announced its new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus smartphones back in September, it made no mention whatsoever of sapphire glass display. Everyone was expecting the new iPhones to have sapphire glass display, as there were countless rumors of Apple stocking up on it, but the new phones had Gorilla glass displays. It’s true that Apple did not use the words Gorilla glass, but the description fits the bill.

Now, GT Advanced Technologies, parts suppliers for the California-based tech giant, has filed for bankruptcy yesterday. It listed its assets of $1.5 billion and $1.3 billion liabilities. This comes as quite a shock, as in the fall of 2014, Apple signed a$578 million deal in which GT Advanced Technologies would make sapphire glass displays for iPhones.

What happened between the signing of the deal that would have put sapphire glass on every iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus and the introduction of the new iPhones with Gorilla Glass displays? Well, in our opinion, something had to have gone wrong between the two companies for this to have happened.

Just a few months ago, in July, GT Advanced Technologies was worth $2.8 billion, but as a result of the bankruptcy, the stock fell more than 90% and reached a new low of 75 cents.

Some are saying that GT Advanced Technologies had become too dependent on Apple and when their relationship suffered, the company simply could not recover. What are your thoughts on the fact that Apple bankrupts sapphire glass makers? Share them with us in the comment section below.

Apple’s iPhone 6 is Finally Available in China

September 30, 2014 By Jack M. Robinson Leave a Comment

Last week we reported on how the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have sold more than 10 million units in the opening weekend, thus breaking any record previously held by Apple. What’s even more amazing is that they’ve done this without China’s help. Up until today, the Chinese government put a ban on the new Apple devices, but now the iPhone 6 is finally available in China.

iPhone 6 is Finally Available in China

Apple has finally gotten China to approve the new iPhone 6 in their country. The Chinese government held their ground as Apple tried and tried to get China to sell their new smartphone. Apple received a key license after it went through some rigorous scrutiny by the Chinese government. According to an official statement by the government, Apple has been given the green light to sell their devices in China after it addressed many security risks about personal data. In short, Apple promised that it would not give away personal data of its customers to any other government, except the Chinese one, of course.

iPhone 6 is Finally Available in China

Apple told the public that the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus will go on sale on October 17. If you live in China, then you can pre-order your device starting with October 10. Nearly a month after the new Apple devices hit the U.S. market the iPhone 6 is finally available in China.

The new iPhone 6 will have some serious competition in China, as the latest smartphone from Samsung, the Galaxy Note 4, has just went on sale on Monday. Xiaomi, local smartphone maker, is also a serious competitor to the Apple’s iPhone.

What are your thoughts on this news? Are you happy that the iPhone 6 is finally available in China? Drop us a line in the comment section below and tell us about it.

Apple Released iOS 8.0.2 after Complaints of Faulty iOS 8.0.1

September 26, 2014 By Troy Rubenson Leave a Comment

A little while back we share with you the news about Apple’s new iOS 8 launch and today we’re happy to announce that Apple has released iOS 8.0.2 update, after the first update, the iOS 8.0.1 was faulty. It didn’t allow many of the users to make or receive calls and it even locked users out of their phones by disabling TouchID Fingerprint sensor.

Today, Apple has managed to soothe the aching hears of many who were experiencing problems with their phones due to the iOS update that Apple released at the beginning of the week. The previous update, the iOS 8.0.1, turned many of the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus smartphones into bricks.

Apple Released iOS 8.0.2

After an intense session of software engineering, Apple released iOS 8.0.2, which is safe and working as it should:

iOS 8.0.2 is now available for users, it fixes an issue that affected iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus users who downloaded iOS 8.0.1, and includes improvements and bug fixes originally in iOS 8.0.1. We apologize for inconveniencing the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus users who were impacted by the bug in iOS 8.0.1.

If you’re curious to know how many iPhones were affected by the faulty software update, you should know that the California-based company places the number at around 40,000 devices. The update was only available for a few hours, which is why only 40,000 people managed to snap it. Apple withdrew it in a matter of hours after releasing it, after the problems were reported.

iTunes doesn’t usually let you downgrade your operating system, but Apple created an workaround to allow people to downgrade to iOS 8, so that their phones could work.

Were you affected by the faulty operating system? Are you happy that Apple released iOS 8.0.2? Share your thoughts in the comment section below.

Record Sales for Apple iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus: Over 10 Million

September 23, 2014 By Georgia Dawson Leave a Comment

Yesterday we talked about the large number of people who grabbed the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus on the opening weekend and today we’ve got the official numbers.

More than 10 million iPhones were sold during the opening weekend all over the world. The new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus were a massive hit and their sales have broken all the previous records held by Apple.

iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus

In 2012 iPhone 5 and iPhone 5C did amazing in terms of sales, and Apple sold 9 million devices in the opening weekend, but nobody quite expected that record to be broken any time soon. Bear in mind that iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are not yet for sale in China, as the country is still waiting for its regulators to approve the Apple smartphones. Had the new iPhones been sold in China over the opening weekend, the numbers would have been even more spectacular.

Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO released a statement on Monday evening, in which he made public the official numbers and added that:

Sales for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus exceeded our expectations for the launch weekend and we couldn’t be happier. While our team managed the manufacturing ramp better than ever before, we could have sold many more iPhones with greater supply and we are working hard to fill orders as quickly as possible.

Indeed, Apple could have sold much more and it going to. The analysts are predicting that the current two iPhone models are going to be the most successful Apple smartphones to date.

Do you own an iPhone? Are you going to update to the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus? Were you one of the many who brought home a new Apple smartphone during this weekend? Share your thoughts with us in the comment section below.

Millions Get iPhone 6 on Opening Weekend

September 22, 2014 By Deborah Cobing Leave a Comment

We’ve reported on how the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus reached a record 4 million preorders and today, ahead of Apple releasing their official iPhone 6 opening weekend numbers, we’re going to take a quick look at how the situation presents itself.

Indeed, 4 million preorders is an impressive number and Apple fans are used to grabbing their favorite blanket and some snacks and spending a night, if not more, in line at an Apple store just to be among the first to get their hands on one of the two new iPhones.

In the United States, the iPhone is the number one smartphone. It has a 41.9% market share, while Samsung’s Galaxy line has 27.8%. In 2013, more than 9 million iPhones were sold on opening weekend and we suspect the numbers are much higher for the iPhone 6 on opening weekend.

iPhone 6 on Opening Weekend

Unfortunately, there is no official iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus release date for China, which is a huge market for Apple. Tim Bajarin, from Creative Strategies, believes that the iPhone 6 on opening weekend sales are going to be around 6.7 million. Naturally, the numbers would have been higher, had the device been launched in China.

Still, Barclay said that the iPhone 6 on opening weekend numbers are a meaningless figure because it only represents Apple’s supply. As soon as the official numbers are released, the world will know if iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are as successful as the analysts are predicting. We will keep you updated.

What are your thoughts on the iPhone 6 on opening weekend? Were you one of the fans who got a smartphone this past weekend? Are you going to get one soon? Drop us a line in the comment section below and let us know all about it.
