Mozilla’s New Interim CEO Announced – Could He Be The Permanent One?

April 16, 2014 By Troy Rubenson 1 Comment

chris beard mozilla ceoAfter the controversies involving Mozilla’s previous CEO Brendan Eich regarding his anti-gay marriage political views, Mozilla’s new CEO was announced: his name is Chris Beard and he will be chief executive officer replacing the former CEO who resigned after donating money to an anti-gay marriage support group. Brendan Eich only lasted in his position for about two weeks.

Mozilla’s new interim CEO Chris Beard has been an executive in residence at Greylock Partners which is a venture firm and he was also marketing chief for Mozilla. Beard has been involved with Mozilla since Firefox was created.

Mitchell Baker, the executive chairwoman for Mozilla said praised Beard saying that he has a very clear vision of how to take Mozilla’s vision further and turn it into programs and products. Baker also said that the election of the new CEO comes right in the middle of an unexpected leadership transition at Mozilla.

Baker wrote that “Chris has been a Mozillian longer than most. He’s been actively involved with Mozilla since before we shipped Firefox 1.0, he’s guided and directed many of our innovative projects, and his vision and sense of Mozilla is equal to anyone’s. In this time of transition there is no better person to lead us. Chris has one of the clearest visions of how to take the Mozilla mission and turn it into programs and activities and product ideas that I have ever seen.”

Chris Beard is also a serious candidate to become the permanent CEO for Mozilla. Beard has been working for Mozilla for many years and had important leadership roles dealing with new products, marketing and innovation and has been part of two major Mozilla products: Firefox for Android and the operating system Firefox OS. Beard also handled the launch of Firefox 1.0 back in 2004.

Mozilla’s new interim CEO – the beginning of a new chapter

Beard’s appointment on Monday signals the fact that Mozilla is trying to close a difficult chapter for their organization after the previous CEO resigned due to the controversies with the anti-gay marriage issues.

Mozilla employees are also eager to start a new chapter and seemed very pleased with the decision to make Chris Beard the new interim CEO, greeting him on their Twitter accounts.

Mozilla’s new interim CEO was also very happy about his new position and twitted that he was “Excited to step in as interim CEO to continue shaping the future of the Web for public good.”

Firefox Browsers to Come Pre-Installed on Kobo Arc Tablets And GSmart Simba SX1 Smartphone

November 8, 2013 By Deborah Cobing Leave a Comment

The Kobo Arc tablets and the GSmart Simba SX1 Smartphone from Gigabyte would have the Firefox browser installed on the devices by default. This is Mozilla’s way of making their presence in the mobile devices segment that has been witnessing maximum activity off late.

Firefox

The GSmart Simba SX1 from Gigabyte is going to be available soon in the market as announced by the company. They have also spelt out the specifications of the set which would be a dual SIM sporting device. It also has a unique feature which enables users to have three way talk using the phone. No special app or carrier intervention is required for the user to place an active call on hold and introduce a third caller into the conference mode. Other specifications of the GSmart Simba SX1 are a dial core processor at its core clocking at 1.4 GHz. The OS is Android 4.2 Jelly Bean while another distinct feature of the set is that it shoots pictures automatically if kept in standing position.

Coming to the Kobo Arc 7 tablet that had been launched in August 2012, it comes powered by a quad core MediaTek chip clocking at 1.2 GHz. The tablet falls in the 7 inch category and has a screen resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels. There is also the Kobo Arc 7 HD which has a screen resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels while being of the same 7 inch dimension. The core processor for this tablet is an NVIDIA Tegra 3 chip. The third tablet in the Kobo Arc line of tablets is the 10 inch Kobo Arc 10 HD with a screen resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixles. The core processor in this tablet is a quad core NVIDIA Tegra 4 chip clocking at 1.8 GHz. The OS for the Kobo Arc line of tablets is 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.

So far as the fight for browser presence on tablets or mobile devices go, at the moment Chrome holds a better stronghold than Firefox which is better known in the desktop environment. The Firefox in the Android environment has one important feature worth taking note of, and that being it can present the content in a clean and easy way to read. Users can use the Reader feature built into Firefox for Android for this task.
