If you are a gaming enthusiast or, even better, a First Person Shooter aficionado, then the news recently released by 13th Lab (the same people who provide real-time 3D tracking and mapping SLAM technology for NASA and their Mars Rover) will make you jump the ceiling: welcome to the future, as we now have the Rescape Game Controller, a reality gaming platform that allows the FPS players to fully immerse into their game, having the possibility to indeed be mobile, use the multiplayer features and transform their surrounding reality with a structural 3D reconstruction software which basically turns your living room into a battlefield.
The key concept of the Rescape Game Controller, as it was envisioned by the specialists who built it is “mobile”: you can use it on an iPhone accessory resembling vaguely a gun, with an iPhone mounted on it, allowing the player to look directly at it. Due to the platform’s 3D positioning capabilities, the player can move forward (or in any space direction for that matter) and the FPS character moves in real – time in the same direction. The greatest catch about the Rescape Game Controller, however, is that it allows the user to interact with the other users and can choose their setting from indoors to outdoors, as the platform to replace the reality’s canvas, something that wasn’t ever able to achieve while playing FPS games from your regular desktop.
What’s in store for us based on the Rescape Game Controller?
Now that we can move, shoot, run, hide and escape in a FPS game that mimics the real world and thus offering us a true virtual gaming experience, the next step the guys from 3thLab will take is to release the same platform for Android and it will follow soon, given the success of the innovation. On the long run, the developers are thinking about creating virtual reality and augmented reality games to match the platform and confer mobile gaming a new future.
