Nvidia Announces the New Tesla K80 GPU Accelerator

November 17, 2014 By Deborah Cobing Leave a Comment

nvidia tesla k80
After being sued back by Samsung for patent infringements, Nvidia has a new product to show: the new Tesla K80 GPU accelerator. The new accelerator is faster and more powerful than the current K40 and will be leveraged by tech giants like Dell, HP and other system manufacturers. The new Tesla K80 comes a year after Nvidia released the K40 GPU accelerator.

The new Tesla K80 was announced today at the SC14 computer show in New Orleans and it will be Nvidia’s flagship software product. The new Tesla K80 will be part of Nvidia Tesla Accelerated Computing Platform, which is specialized in software, hardware and other products needed for accelerated applications within the data center.

There are many high-performance computing organizations that are turning to accelerators for a performance boost on their systems. The most used so far are the GPUs from Intel – the x86 co=processor, and the Nvidia Advanced Micro Devices. These accelerators also keep a lid on the power consumption and on the operating costs.

According to a new report, 62 of the fastest 500 supercomputers at the moment are using accelerators, and the numbers have gone up with 53 since November last year. 44 of the supercomputers use Nividia GPUs and 17 run on x86 from Intel.
According to Sumit Gupta, the general manager of Tesla products at Nvidia, the new Tesla K80 is ten times faster than a CPU. It has 4,9992 CUDA parallel processing cores and can run complex applications faster and more efficiently than previous GPUs.

The new Tesla K80 will have Nvidia’s GPU Boost technology, which will increase the performance of the GPU when the applications need it. The K80 has two GPUs per board, which will enable it to double the performance of applications designed to work with multiple GPUs. It will also run on a 24GB of GDDR5 memory. The new Tesla K80 has twice the memory of the previous Tesla K40.

The new Tesla K80 will support x86, ARM-based chips and Power and can support more than 280 HPC and other data center applications.
Gupta said that the new Tesla accelerator

“extends what now has been a very large and broad ecosystem for the platform.”

Watch Dogs Came Out With a Bang and a Myriad of Problems for AMD Users

May 27, 2014 By Georgia Dawson Leave a Comment

watch dogs system requirementsIf you are an avid gamer, you probably waited for Watch Dogs to show up with more enthusiasm than Apple fans wait for the next Apple gadget. Unfortunately, Watch Dogs came out with a bang and so many problems, people don’t know if to rejoice or throw their PC’s out the window.

The game was launched yesterday and it already received outstanding ovations from the critics. A curious mind also searched the torrents sites and found the game cracked and pirated a few hours after its release, something that shows that the world was more than ready to welcome the hacking hero into their lives.

But, just as the guys from Segment Next say, the game
Watch Dogs may become critics’ darling considering the raving reviews, but it will remain a painful experience for PC Gamers, who wish to experience it the best way possible on their high-end machines.
Why is that? Well, briefly put, the game crashes, stops, freezes, displays errors and constant FPS droppings, gives you a black screen, a blue screen or a death error, loads in a lifetime or doesn’t load at all, has broken audio and video and the list can go on like this forever. The problem is not that the game has birth defects, but that your PC needs a lot of fixes and upgrades. If you use nVidia products, you have all chances to actually play Watch Dogs at a decent or high level of satisfaction. If you fall into the category of “AMD users”, the bad news are yet to come: you will probably never get to play the game at full performance, if at all.

The awful disappointment comes from tech analysts and reviewers:

Performance in Watch Dogs on AMD systems is something that AMD can’t fix with a patch, something that Joel Hruska from ExtremeTech talked about last year, where he said: AMD is no longer in control of its own performance. While GameWorks doesn’t technically lock vendors into NVIDIA solutions, a developer that wanted to support both companies equally would have to work with AMD and NVIDIA from the beginning of the development cycle to create a vendor-specific code path. It’s impossible for AMD to provide a quick after-launch fix. This kind of maneuver ultimately hurts developers in the guise of helping them.

For a better gaming experience, you can turn to your Play Station 4, XBox One or other previous console model you might have, as the game is said to be working on them optimally. However, if the Windows – powered PC is all you have, switching from AMD to nVidia might be a good idea too. Now that Watch Dogs came out with a bang, it would be a pity to deny yourself the experience of playing one of the most interesting games ever developed, just because your PC is technologically impaired.

Windows RT Failure Hurting Chip Makers As Well

December 6, 2013 By Jack M. Robinson Leave a Comment

Windows RT not too long ago was being heralded as the OS that would bridge the tablet and PC divide though that obviously did not happen. And there seem no respite in sight either as all signals point out to the particular Windows version being headed to the gallows. This has also been echoed by Julie Larson-Green the Executive Vice President at Microsoft while speaking at the UBS Global Tech Conference. What he said in explicit terms is that Microsoft is not going to have all three OS, that is Windows Phone, Windows RT and the full scale Windows in future. Windows RT started off well enough and made its debut with the Microsoft Surface device. This was followed by tablets from Samsung, Lenovo, ASUS and Dell also running the Windows RT though all of that has since come to a halt, leaving just Microsoft and Nokia yet using Windows RT. As further proof of things not being well enough with the RT version, it has caused Microsoft to write off a staggering $900 million to account for unsold first gen Surface tablets.

microsoft surface tablet

However, the RT has not proved to be a bane for just Microsoft who made the tablets but for the chip makers as well whose processors had made up the core of the tablet devices running Windows RT. This includes Qualcomm, ARM and NVIDIA. Their chips are made to run specifically on the ARM architecture which is what the Windows RT version is compliant with. The Surface 2 tablets for example are made by NVIDIA using the Tegra 4 ARM based chips. Qualcomm have their Snapdragon 800 chip which is also ARM based and has been used to power the Nokia 2520 tablet.

It is not just the one or two tablet projects that the RT and its supporting chipmakers had been banking on for their business. They had plans to take on the PC market piggybacking the OS, thereby making serious inroads into the turn now ruled by the Intel x86 series of chips. There is also the issue of Intel having come up with the Haswell series of chips that are more efficient in performance and battery consumption, making them favored by tablet makers such as Lenovo, Dell, Toshiba and such who have naturally not taken to the ARM chips for their tablet devices.

That RT is not doing well was felt when ARM CEO Warren East had mentioned at the Mobile World Congress in February that RT was not doing as good as it had been hoped to do. Luis Pineda, the senior VP of product management at Qualcomm had spoken positively about RT in May when they were making chips to be used on the Dell tablets that were running on RT.

NVIDIA however had accepted the failure of RT at the very first stages. Jen-Hsun Huang its CEO stated the company had suffered loss to the tune of $300 million due the poor sales of the RT based devices. The NVIDIA Tegra chip is used on the Surface 2 tablets and the company he mentioned did not expect good returns from that investment.

With the end of RT close at hand not only Microsoft but these associated chip making companies face the consequences of their investment not returning results they had hoped.

NVIDIA Launches New Update For Its Shield Gaming Console, Enables Console Mode Button Mapping for Touch Based Games

October 30, 2013 By Janet Vasquez Leave a Comment

The Shield from NVIDIA is a gaming console that can run most games developed for Android on it. It has a display of 5 inch but the only issue is that android games being touchscreen centric is a bit difficult to play using the game controller. The Shield otherwise is priced quite competitively at $300.

nvidia-shield

Realising the gamer’s difficulty, NVIDIA is coming out with an update that would enable users to map the game controllers like the fingers and therefore the need to swipe the screen would not be there. The update would also enable connecting the Shield to a TV screen and playing the game thereon. The Shield is connected to the TV with an HDMI cable and then a Bluetooth controller can be linked. Need for holding the Shield controller in hand would not be there after that.

This mode of operation termed Console Mode would also work with NVIDIA GameStream. Games on the PC which has an NVIDIA graphics card could be connected this way to the TV and be played on the TV screen. The game console supports about 50 games as of now. The advantage is quite clear, that users can play both Android and PC games on their handheld console or the TV screen using this device and the software update from NVIDIA.

The update gets Android 4.3 to the game console. There is also the possibility of the APK or OBB files to be shifted to the external memory card attached via SD Card post the update. Users though won’t have a whiff of any of these changes so far as their using the device is concerned, as they get to play their games without any issues. This frees up internal memory of the handheld as well.

So far as hardware specifications of the NVIDIA shield goes, it is powered by an NVIDIA Tegra 4 ARM Cortex-A15 quad core processor. It has 2 GB of internal RAM and the display unit is 5 inch by dimension, having a resolution of 1280 x 720pixels. It also has stereo speakers for adding flavor to the games and WiFi, Bluetooth for connectivity. It also is GPS enabled.

New Shield 2 Gaming Console Likely to be Launch in 2014

October 23, 2013 By Sebastian Mc’Mannen Leave a Comment

NVIDIA had launched the Shield handheld gaming device back in July much to the glee of hardcore gaming enthusiasts. It is basically a handheld gaming console that is based on Android and come with some high end specs. The device also boasts of superior quality which together with its ability to stream PC games ensured it never went out of favor with the gaming community. It’s three months stay in the market has been without a hitch after it had suffered about a month of delay during launch due to some issues with a particular component of the device.

Shield 2

Nvidia though isn’t sitting on the laurels and have dropped enough hint of there being a successor to the first gen Shield that is already in the making. Likely to be named Shield 2, the new gen device is expected to break cover sometime during early 2014.

That the possibility is quite true stems from the report of Endgadget after they had an interview with the CEO of NVIDIA, Jen-Hsun Huang. The talk was centered around the Tegra chip that is in the making when Huang mentioned about the new Tegra chip would be coming with the new SHIELD. He also mentioned in his talk that the company comes out with a new Tegra chip every year. The building of the Tegra chip is associated with project named Logan.

The market gets a fresh update of Smartphone and tablet on a near regular basis every year. This does not happen for gaming consoles. If NVIDIA does follow a new gaming console with every new Tegra chip that they come up every year, then this trend would be a very welcome one for gamers all over the world.

Nvidia Tegra Tab 7 to Arrive Soon, Found Being Tested in AnTuTu benchmarks

August 26, 2013 By Sebastian Mc’Mannen Leave a Comment

Nvidia, the graphics processing unit giant which has already made a name in the world of mobile chip business is now looking forward to make it big in the tablet niche. The news has come from a tech blog called Techkiddy which has published that the Nvidia Tegra Tab 7 tablet has been spotted in AnTuTu benchmark.

The tablet is currently being tested at the labs in China and it is being referred by the name Tegra Tab 7 Premium. Google which has released the new edition Nexus 7 recently has moved on to Qualcomm from Nvidia. So, the new slate from Google is powered with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU. What may be the reason behind it? Some analysts feel that it may because the GPU giant is looking forward to roll out its own tablet very soon.

Tegra-Tab

It has been in the news that Nvidia is working on a 7 inch tablet for quite some time. The tablet that is still under the wraps is believed to be powered with Tegra 4 SoC with a clocking speed of 1.8GHz. The device was seen to have a score of 27643 points. The test result showed that it is powered with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.

We have got an image of the mysterious Nvidia Tegra Tab for you. At the rear of the tablet, it reads ‘Tegra Tab’ which definitely indicates that the said tablet is powered with a Tegra CPU. Recent leaks also indicate that the Tegra Tab will house a much higher resolution display which is the reason it has manage to score such points.

Nvidia which had released the Android powered gaming console in United States and Canada was powered with a Tegra 4 CPU. The console supports games that are available on TegraZone, Google Play Store and Stream from Valve. The score of Tegra Shield device on AnTuTu is higher than the new Tegra Tab.

Tegra Tab which is still in its nascent is predicted to take on the new Nexus 7 from Google. It is rumored to have 1280 x 720 pixels resolution. Leaks about the Tegra Tab shows that there will be a 5MP shooter at the rear. It will come with connectivity ports such as microUSB, microHDMI and microSD.

More and more rumors have started pouring in about the Tegra Tab. However, there is no official confirmation from the Nvidia camp. So we are not sure about when the device will be out in the market.
