Microsoft has been trying its best to minimize the piracy of the software manufactured by them. Software piracy has become a global issue. Still, Microsoft is very determined to get rid of counterfeit software.
On Tuesday, Microsoft had announced that they have put to rest 3,265 software piracy issues in 2012. Out of this huge number, 35 cases have originated from US, 19 issues have from different states and the remaining 3230 have originated from 42 international countries.
Microsoft CyberCrime Center spokesperson stated that the software counterfeiting affects not just local but also worldwide economic development. It also puts both customers and businesses in danger. Microsoft claims that they were able to thwart plentiful of piracy issues until because of good support from its customers.
Microsoft allows users to report counterfeit software whenever they come across a malware or virus on their PC. From 2005 when the company started the reporting service, till now 450,000 customers have made use of the pirated software reporting service.
In March, Microsoft had conducted a study on counterfeit software in the world. The study showed that thirty-three percent software available in the market are pirated. The study also revealed that the software piracy is quite rampant and many users are not even aware that they are using fake software.
In order to fight with piracy, Microsoft has teamed up with HP and Samsung to make sure that their PCs in China are running on genuine Windows and Office software. In March, Microsoft had also partnered with Lenovo which is China’s largest PC manufacturer for preventing piracy of Windows operating system. Recently, Microsoft had filed a lawsuit against a PC reselling company called VertexPC from Atlanta for selling and marketing PCs that ran on unauthorized copies of Windows OS.
Even though Microsoft has been pursuing the piracy issue diligently, more than 100 pirated apps have landed up in Windows Store. Under the guise of famous software, the makers of such apps have tricked customers into spending money for such fake apps.
