People always have the tendency to think about what would have happened if they did something sooner; if they have met a certain person in an earlier time in their life; how would have they developed differently and why. But what about solar systems? What if there was one that is double the age of ours and already here with so much time available in order to create life? Well, this solar system already exists. And it makes ours look as a minion.
NASA has recently discovered a new solar system very similar to ours, that has under its wings five rocky planets. The announcement has been made this Tuesday, making the identity of the 11.2 billion years old solar system public. As compared to the Universe, which is scientifically proved to have about 13.8 billion years old, and to our solar system, which is 4.5 billion years old, this new solar system seems to be the oldest one ever existed and that has planets so similar to ours.
If the planets were to be measured, they are all smaller than Earth; the largest one relates to the dimensions of Venus and the smallest one, to those of Mercury. Having one tenth the distance as compared to the Earth with the Sun, they circle their star in 10 days. This fact means that they are placed too close to their Sun and also to each other, concerning the habitation and the possibility of it to even exist.
Scientist Daniel Huber from the University of Sydney said that
“We’ve never seen anything like this — it is such an old star and the large number of small planets makes it very special. It is extraordinary that such an ancient system of terrestrial-sized planets formed when the universe was just starting out, at a fifth its current age.”
Tiago Campante of the University of Birmingham in England is a lead researched that has noted in a statement that because of the great resemblance of this planets to our Earth, scientists now have a hope of finding ancient life in the galaxy.
The sun of this magnificent new found system is named Kepler-444 and it is part of the Constellation Lyre. The observations of NASA have been made in a period of time that took at least 4 years. The scientists that have made such an important discovery are from Europe, Australia and the US altogether, and the results of their studies have been published in the latest edition of the Astrophysical Journal.
