AT&T Out and Google Comes in At Starbucks to Offer Wi-Fi

August 1, 2013 By Sebastian Mc’Mannen 1 Comment

Are you a frequenter to Starbucks? Very soon you will be able to enjoy faster Wi-Fi internet connectivity at Starbucks. The reason behind it is that Starbucks has recently partnered with Google for using its Wi-Fi services. Google which has teamed up with Level 3 Communications replace the existing Wi-Fi connectivity offered by AT&T at Starbucks.

The new Wi-Fi connection from Google is going to be ten times faster than the service offered by AT&T. By next month, Starbucks’ patrons will be able to accessed faster internet service. There are 7000 Starbucks outlets in US and all of them are going to receive Google’s Wi-Fi connection. The connection will be first launched at busiest locations. The entire process of installing Wi-Fi connectivity at all the 7000 outlets will be completed in a period of 18 months.

All the Starbucks outlets have got T1 lines that 1.5Mbps connectivity. With Google on its side, Starbucks will have several options onboard such as DSL, cable modems and T1 lines according to the requirement of each outlet. The connectivity is expected to become ten times faster than before. However, the speed will vary from one store to the other.

Starbucks will continue to offer free Wi-Fi through Google. Adam Brotman who is the chief digital officer for Starbucks said that they give a lot of importance to improving the customer experience and he believes that if they continue to do that, business will also benefited down the line. All the changes that are done at the outlets are mainly done in order to improve the in-store experience to enhance sales.

Brotman made it clear that they did not opt to go away from AT&T but they were in talks with Google from quite some time to offer faster connectivity. Starbucks always aims to offer faster Wi-Fi connectivity and by partnering with Google it has become possible.

Every week millions of people access Starbucks’ free Wi-Fi service. By offering faster internet connection, Starbucks aims to attract more number of visitors. Many carriers are now shying away from offering unlimited data plans for mobile phones.

By partnering with Starbucks, Google will also be upgrading the Starbucks Digital Network. It is the page that shows up when people access Wi-Fi at Starbucks. Brotman refrained from providing any details how the company will be working towards bringing about changes. Also, he did not reveal anything on the financial arrangements between Google and Starbucks for offering faster connection.

Google which has now become tech giant will show its brand name on the Wi-Fi network page and also the terms of service page. Google’s faster Wi-Fi connectivity will allow users with increased bandwidth that will help users to achieve faster downloads and accessing quicker streaming content.

Many Starbucks visitors have often complained about insanely slow internet. Since Starbucks now doing away with AT&T and working with Google to offer faster web connection, the worldclass eating outlet will soon start receiving more customers.
