This app gave the possibility for a person to hire and control another person so that the latter would do whatever the first person wanted her to do.
Did you understand anything? We didn’t either. It sounded strange, a bit crazy and, let’s admit, a bit too Avatar meets Matrix for our tastes.
However, we let it slide. The reason we didn’t take the human remote – controlling project too seriously was that the crowdfunding campaign was terminated, due to some PR and marketing misunderstandings. Here is what TechCrunch was saying about the Zabosu Project:
There’s currently a project on Kickstarter that looks to bring a similar experience [Avatar] to planet Earth. It’s called Zabosu, and it’s a technology that allows one human, sitting at home in front of their computer, the ability to “control” another person and use that person’s smartphone to see and hear all of their surroundings.
The update on the same article said the campaign was over and we all went on with our lives because, come on, who would fund such a crazy app in the first place?
But, just as it usually happens in the Marvel superhero movies, nothing is finished until the credits roll, and you have to wait for the element of surprise after that moment too. In other words, the human remote – controlling project that still goes by the name of Zabosu Project is back and kicking again! What is this all about, you wonder? Let’s listen to the developers’ explanation:
Zabosu’s developed an incredible, almost magical service that lets one person actually take control of another person, anywhere in the world there’s a 4G cellular signal. It’s not quite as crazy as it sounds. The person being controlled, who we call an “Actor,” starts our app and sticks their phone in a pocket (or on a lanyard) with the camera facing out to stream live audio and video of their surroundings. The person controlling them, who we call a “Director,” connects to the stream with a web browser to see and hear everything going on around the Actor, from the Actor’s point of view. The Director also speaks to the Actor using the computer’s microphone and the Actor’s earpiece. Because the Director is paying the Actor, the Actor does what the Director tells them to do. The intention, in most applications, is to make the Actor a human extension, or projection, of the Director into whatever environment the Actor happens to be in.
So let’s get this straight: you can be and not be in a place in the same time, while you need to pay another person to do whatever you don’t feel like doing, but do anyway (as long as you give somebody indications of what to say in your stead, you could better say everything yourself). So… why?
The crowdfunding campaign is open again to all villains wanting to take over the world with an army of Actors. This is better than Avatar meets Matrix, you have to admit. If the human remote – controlling project gets its money, you will have the app available September this year.
