The twins were born only 18 minutes apart, but in different years
STATES CHRONICLE – A Californian woman gave birth to twins who were born one year apart. Of course, the actual difference of age between the two babies was 18 minutes, but the first one was born at 11.58 p.m. on December 31st, 2017, while the second was born at 12.16 a.m. on January 1st, 2018.
Maria Esperanza Flores Rios, from California was the last woman to give birth in the year that has passed and the first one in the new year at the Delano Regional Medical Center. She had twins, a boy and a girl, who were born only 18 minutes apart. However, the New Year came right between the two births.
The older one is the baby boy, Joaquin Ontiveros. He was born just two minutes before midnight, but he still got to live in the year 2017. His sister, Aitana de Jesus Ontiveros, missed New Year’s Eve by only 16 minutes. For her, the doctors had to perform a C-section.
Cases of twins born in different years occur extremely rarely
Seyed Tamijidi was the doctor who delivered the twins. In his 35-year-old long career, he said this was the first time when he delivered twins who had been born in different years. Statistics say the chances of such a birth are one to 59,000, so the event was really special.
The mother is happy the babies were born one year apart, even though she wasn’t expecting them on New Year’s Eve. She was due to give birth only a month later. Her actual due date was January 27th, but she was supposed to undergo a C-section on January 10th.
Both babies and the mother are healthy, and are getting all the attention they need. The boy wasn’t only the oldest, but also the biggest. He was 18 inches long and weighed 5 pounds and 9 ounces, while his sister was 16 inches long and weighed 4 pounds and 10 ounces.
