Two tanning salons have been accused of hiding the risks of cancer that are presented by artificial tanning and for actually promoting so called health benefits.
The two salons have been sued by attorney general Eric Schneiderman who has threatened other tanning salons that might be misleading the public with false information.
It seems that the salons have used adds and statements that was promoting artificial tanning as something safe that could increase the Vitamin D levels in our body and also could reduce the chances of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes.
The salons involved in the law suit are Portofino Spas, which has five different places in Manhattan and a salon called Total Tan that works in 26 different locations. The other two saloons which have been warned are Planet Fitness and Beach Bum Tanning, according to records.
People should not let themselves fooled and should know that it doesn’t exist any benefit or safety in artificial tanning. Exposing your body to ultra violet light machines heightens the chances for developing skin cancer, provokes radiations and endangers the lives of millions of young Americans, explained Schneiderman trough a statement.
He wanted to point out the fact that 6 years ago, the World Health Organization categorized tanning devices as one of the highest causes of developing cancer, belonging in the same group as tobacco. Medical experts have demanded last year for people to reduce their artificial tanning trough a report that was stressing on how often skin cancer has become.
A study conducted the past year, in the United States, has shown that artificial tanning is one of the factors that leads to the development of 400,000 cases of skin cancer every year.

According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, artificial tanning can provoke premature aging and different types of cancer, melanoma included(which can be lethal).
In New York the law is very strict on allowing minors to artificially tan. For example teens under the age of 17 are prohibited to tan and the law demands parental consent for teens under 18 years old.
It appears that none of these factors and laws has stopped the tanning salons in cause to falsely advertise the effects of tanning beds by promoting them a s health friendly.
A spokesperson of Portofino salon , stated that there hasn’t yet been released a scientific study that shows connections between artificial tanning and skin cancer.
A representative of Planet Fitness said that the company is looking for a way to resolve the situation while Beach Bum Tanning didn’t not respond to comments.
