Scientist Nikola Tesla was a man with a dream: he dreamed about wireless electricity, something that would change forever the way humanity powers up anything you can imagine and be able to reach the everlasting goal of using clean sources of energy. Electricity manipulation without using cords is an idea that wasn’t too viable a hundred years ago, but today it does not only seem plausible, it also seems doable. A start – up company from Watertown, MA, recently reported outstanding progress in the research of using wireless electricity to power up cell – phones, household and medical items that use batteries and even cars… but we’ll get to that in a moment.
Back in 2007, a group of researchers from MIT managed to work on Tesla’s principles of transferring energy through a power coil to another device which uses a similar coil and a matching frequency and came up with the concept of resonant power transfer. From that point on, they further explored the system and now, Dr Katie Hall from WiTricity (the company releasing the news on their breakthrough on wireless technology) declared for the press that their research is going to change everything for the future generations.
How will wireless electricity work?
According to the researchers, we won’t have electricity fields floating around our homes, like in Science – Fiction movies, but we will have magnetic fields around us – which are considered safe for our health and the environment. If described simply, the technology makes perfect sense: we will have a resonating coil (which generates the magnetic field) and if we approach a device using a matching coil, the device will be electrically charged, no cords, no outlets, no stress. Speaking of safety, this system can be compared to Wi – Fi fields generated by home routers, so basically there is nothing to worry about.
Wireless electricity and future innovations
The researchers from WiTricity are taking Tesla’s dreams even further: they are already collaborating with a medical company to find the most optimal solutions of recharging medical devices such as heart assistance devices in a non-intrusive manner. But things don’t stop here: they are talking about more than charging your smartphone while walking around the house with the cell phone in your pocket and never have to buy batteries for the remote control ever again, but they are dreaming about cars that will never have to pull to the gas station, as they charge effortlessly and very clean while parked in front of your house.
Clean energy and efficient use of resources is not a new idea: specialists from Toyota are experimenting with wireless electricity to power up their hybrids and are now testing a charging station which allows cars to be fully recharged if parked over the charging pad installed in the driveway. This is beyond everything Tesla aimed for and, just as the researchers say, this wireless technology paradigm will not only tremendously improve peoples’ quality of life, but it will lead humanity to a huge outcome: reducing pollution, building clean and efficient energy homes and make the world a better, safer place for the generations to come.
